Wormery
winter worms

It’s getting mighty cold out there now.

i have wrapped up my wormery in straw to keep it insulated and snuggly.

Let’s hope that this is enough to keep them going through the sub-zero temperatures.

I don’t want to root around and see if they are OK for fear of making them too cold.

My guess is that they will all burrow down into the heart of the wormery and give each other plenty of hugs to share the warmth. The food that I’m giving them seems to be sitting uneaten on the surface, which surely can’t be a good thing?

How to make a worm farm

To begin with I ordered one kilogram of night crawlers form a fishing suppliers. Then I built some little houses for them. I piled tyres on top of each other. Then I added the bedding, well rotted manure.

They seemed quite happy. Then I fed them. Luckily I have a lot of kitchen waste.

To begin with, then not much action. I don’t think I was feeding them enough.

So I piled on the scraps. They loved it. I writing wriggling pile of night crawlers. The worm farm was doing what it was supposed the worms were getting some wormery love. Baby worms were being made.
